What we Believe about Child Dedication

We believe that the Scriptures teach that children are of great value and God has a special concern for their well-being. Jesus Himself indicated their significance by tenderly taking them into His arms. The Scriptures as a whole relate instances where children were publicly dedicated. Therefore, we encourage Christian parents to dedicate their children to the Lord publicly in prayer.

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, He was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And He took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” -Mark 10:13-16

What about Baptism?

Child Dedication at SRCC does not involve baptism. Infants are not baptized at our church since they can’t participate in their baptism with an understanding of the meaning and significance of baptism.

The Parent’s Role In Spiritual Development

The Bible is clear that parents are to provide the primary spiritual training for their children. Child   dedication is an opportunity for you to publicly declare your commitment to do so.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These      commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” -Deuteronomy 6:5-9

 What to Expect
Normally, our dedications will include an introduction of your family to the congregation, praying for the parents, publicly dedicating the child to the Lord, and your church family will vow to partner with you to assist in your child’s spiritual growth.

 Practical Issues
Child Dedications are held on Mother's Day, but can also be done at other times during the year.  Please let us know four weeks in advance if you’d like your child to be dedicated.
